Fun Ways to Review using Math Worksheets in Second Grade

Fun Ways to Review using Math Worksheets in Second Grade

It may not seem possible, but it is almost May! You are officially in the last part of the school year! You are nearing the end of the standards you need to teach and if you are like me, you are starting to think about different ways to review math standards with your students. Below are a few of my favorite ways to review using math using worksheets in second grade.

Using Tickets for Rewards

Students love earning rewards! Over the years, I have tried about every reward system out there, and using tickets is by far my favorite. As you prepare for testing, you can allow your students the opportunity to receive tickets for completing review worksheets. These can be used to earn a trip to your treasure chest or to buy small rewards. Students can also trade their tickets in for extra play time or technology time.

If you need to purchase tickets for your classroom, check your local Dollar Tree or if you prefer to order online, check out these from Amazon. They are the cutest little tickets! I have already purchased some and plan to use them once I return to face to face teaching. With 2000 in a package, they should last you a while in your classroom!

Review Homework Swap

Students love choice. One of my favorite ways to use choice in my classroom is called “Homework Swap.” I set up a specific place with a lot of review worksheets. An empty shelf or table works best. Just make sure your students know where to find them. Students are allowed swap any homework assignment they may not like for a second grade review worksheet. I allow them to choose ANY skill to review from the review table.

I also use this opportunity to teach my students about using polite words to make a request. Students may say “Instead of this homework assignment, I’d like to complete a math review worksheet.” This allows students to feel like they get to make decisions about what they are learning. What student doesn’t like that! However, I would definitely set some boundaries with “Homework Swap.” In my classroom I limit it to only one homework swap a week. This ensures that students are continuing to practice current second grade standards while also having the opportunity to review. Second Grade Review Using Boom Cards

Boom Cards for Second Grade Review

You know I love Boom Learning, so of course I’m going to use Boom Cards for reviewing. This platform allows you to review with your students in an interactive way in a variety of ways. You can assign review decks and have students complete them during math centers or for early finishers. You can also project the Boom Cards on your screen, read the problems aloud and have all of your students solve the problems. That way everyone is engaged and paying attention during the review. I always like to make it a challenge by putting my students into teams and letting them compete with each other. Typically, I split my class into 4 to 5 teams. However, depending on your class, you may choose to have them working in partners or smaller teams. It is totally up to you!
