As we approach the end of the year, it is important to make sure you have a plan in place to help your students maintain the information you have taught them throughout the summer. Below are some of my favorite ways to use worksheets to help your students review second grade math his summer.
Summer Worksheets for Reviewing Second Grade Skills
When the final bell rings and you send your students home for the summer, many students are off to camps and to participate in different activities. They are ready for a break, and truthfully, so are you. However, you have the opportunity to help them retain the information they learned in second grade and continue learning throughout the summer so they can be better prepared for third grade. Therefore, it is a great idea to provide your students with second grade math review worksheets to work on during the summer. Take time to put together a packet that reviews the most important concepts from second grade. While not all students will take the time to complete it, many will. Aside from reviewing math, If you need help gathering worksheets, grab my FREE Second Grade Addition Worksheets here.
Although I definitely want my students to practice math over the summer, I also strongly encourage them to read. So, I make sure my students are aware of any summer reading programs in order to encourage reading throughout the summer. Students who are strong readers, also tend to perform well in math.
Expose Students to Third Grade Standards
After a year in the classroom, you know your students and their individual ability levels. While not all of your students are ready to be exposed to third grade standards, many are. When preparing your review packets, make sure to include some worksheets and activities that expose your students to third grade standards. This gives your students a head start as they start the next school year and boost their confidence when they return to the classroom. By knowing some skills already, your students will be better prepared for third grade which will give them an advantage over those students who weren’t exposed to third grade skills during the summer.
Practice third grade place value
When choosing third grade standards to include, start with place value. This is a very important skill students begin working on in third grade. Knowing place value helps students add and subtract more fluently. It will also help them as they begin working on rounding. Place value is an essential skill for continuing to be successful in math as they progress through elementary and eventually middle school. By giving your students the opportunity to practice place value skills over the summer, you will help them tremendously as they go in third grade next year.
